Exploring the Dynamics of Self-Rated Racial Identity, Personality, and Perceived Relationship Quality among Black Female Leaders as Followers With Their Leadership

Statement of The Problem

01 —Racial Identity and Intersectionality

Racial Identity has significance in the relationship quality between leader and follower. Due to intersectionality Women of Color, specifically Black women face more challenges in the workplace due to the intersections of race and gender.

02 — Personality, Microaggressions, Tropes

Microaggressions, racism, sexism discrimination, biases are linked to stereotypes of personality of the Black woman that severely effects the relationship quality with their leader.

03 — Relationship Quality

When the relationship quality is poor and there is a lack of sponsorship, mentorship, and allyship from their leader, Black Women are faced with a “concrete wall.” Making it almost impossible to break into leadership positions.

What We Know

Racial identity and personality can significantly affect the relationship quality between Black female leaders. These factors can shape their perceptions and interactions with their leaders potentially hindering their development and advancement within the workplace. It is recommended that in order to provide solutions to DE&I within organizations there must be a focused on the most marginalized group

Women are having a worse experience than men. Women of color are having a worse experience than white women. And Black women in particular are having the worst experience of all

If employers are advocating for workplace equality for women, then they MUST prioritize, those women facing the greatest marginalization.
